NEW YORK, NY – The iconic Motown Records has enlisted the services of The Roots. Black Thought, Questlove and the rest of the crew are contributing an original song to Motown’s soundtrack for the upcoming film Detroit. Directed by Academy Award winner Katheryn Bigelow and starring John Boyega, the movie depicts the Motor City riots that took place over five days in the summer of 1967.
“It’s been 50 years since the events of this film, but the powerful images I saw on the screen reminded me that we’re still going through the same things now,” Questlove said in a press release. “That knowledge produces anger, but not despair: music has the power to express both anguish and hope.”
The Roots’ track is titled “It Ain’t Fair” and features Grammy Award-winning singer Bilal. The rest of the soundtrack is comprised of work by the original creators of the “Motown Sound.”
“We’re honored and excited to work on such an important and special project as Detroit,” Motown president Ethiopia Habtemariam said. “The music from this soundtrack highlights the ‘Classic Motown Sound’ which is a beautiful accompaniment to the story of tumultuous times in 1967 as well as the struggles we face within society today.”
Detroit debuts in theaters on August 4. Watch the trailer below.
