Killer Mike Honored With His Own Day In Atlanta

Killer Mike Honored With His Own Day In Atlanta

Mike Lavin/@thehomelesspimp
ATLANTA, GA – Monday (July 17) is Killer Mike Day, at least in the city of Atlanta. The Atlanta City Council celebrated the Run The Jewels member, whose real name is Michael Render, with a day named in his honor. Mike received the accolade for his role as an ambassador to the city and his steadfast work as an activist.
“I respect you in so many ways,” City Councilman Andre Dickens told Mike, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You represent the ATL well.”

During the ceremony, Mike had a chance to speak to the council members and others in attendance. The veteran rapper took the opportunity to address issues that concerned him, much like he did earlier this year when he was honored by the Georgia State Senate.
“Atlanta City Council members, I challenge you to make sure that this city is not polarized by race and/or class,” Mike said. “I challenge you to make sure that BeltLine has affordable housing.”

Does A$AP Rocky Call A$AP Bari A “Bitch” During Agenda Performance?

Does A$AP Rocky Call A$AP Bari A "Bitch" During Agenda Performance?

LONG BEACH, CA – A$AP Rocky reportedly fired shots at A$AP Bari — co-founder of the A$AP Mob — at the Agenda Festival in Long Beach, California over the weekend. Despite multiple videos of the event, it’s still difficult to determine if he, in fact, calls out Bari, but the general consensus seems to be that he did.
Last week, Bari found himself facing serious sexual assault allegations after a leaked video hit the internet of him smacking a naked woman’s rear and demanding oral sex. Though Bari released a statement addressing his actions, A$AP Rocky is evidently not having it. During his performance of “Telephone Calls,” he appeared to call the VLONE clothing leader a “bitch.”

“Telephone calls from Young Carti said it’s lit/ called the Young Lord A$AP Bari he a bitch,” Rocky reportedly spit, a twist on the “Call the young Lord, A$AP Bari, he legit” lyric from the track.
The video of Bari first surfaced on an Instagram account registered to @soledout before making its way around the web. In the graphic video, Bari can be heard telling an unidentified woman, “You fucked my assistant, now you’re going to suck my dick.”
As of now, it’s unclear how Bari’s actions will impact the VLONE clothing brand.

Gym Class Heroes’ Travie McCoy Reveals How He Kicked His Heroin Addiction

LONG ISLAND, NY – Back in the ’00s, Gym Class Heroes were the among the hungry crop of indie alt-Hip Hop acts that were giving the majors a run for their money, and Travie McCoy was their frontman and face.
Over the years, the towering rap rocker has enjoyed group and solo success (most notably with his 2010 Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 smash with Bruno Mars, “Billionaire”) but his run hasn’t come without consequences.
During his appearance on R.A. The Rugged Man’s Ignorant Long Island Guy’s Podcast, McCoy disclosed how he beat a heroin addiction that could have killed him.
“I tore my ACL, MCL, meniscus; twisted all that shit up so I’m in the hospital all summer and they put me on OxyContin,” McCoy, 35, recalled. “And they sent me home with a prescription full [of Oxy] and from that point on … and the first time I ran out, I got hella sick withdrawals.”
Opting to cold turkey the habit instead of following a doctor’s advice to re-up on the potent pills led to McCoy being clean for a year, though he was eventually going as far as snorting crushed Oxy on the recreational tip. From there, instead of draining his pockets with the $30-a-pill street price for the painkillers, McCoy says he made the ill-advised decision to switch to full-blown heroin to feed the need. And he admits he was a functioning addict.
“We did the [American Music Awards] with Adam Levine a few years ago … and I don’t remember doing that shit at all but I killed it!” he said with a laugh before adding the disclaimer that he clearly doesn’t advise anyone to follow his blueprint to a hard sobriety. “I would have loved to remember those moments that I don’t remember that I’ve gotten through and not alarmed anyone but I don’t remember.”
According to a 2016 report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, heroin use in the United States has increased 145% since 2007. The drug has been cited among the most addictive substances, but McCoy told R.A. and Co. he’s been clean for 3 1/2 years and counting, citing the birth of his niece as instrumental in his will to live.

Hip Hop Album Sales: JAY-Z’s “4:44” Nabs The Billboard 200 Throne

Hip Hop Album Sales: JAY-Z's "4:44" Nabs The Billboard 200 Throne

Theo Wargo/Getty Images for TIDAL
Not surprisingly, JAY-Z’s critically acclaimed 13th studio album, 4:44, has hit #1 on the Billboard 200 for the week ending July 13. According to Nielsen Music, the project sold 262,296 equivalent album units and is the fourth-largest week for any album of 2017, behind the debuts of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (603,000 units), Drake’s More Life (505,000) and Ed Sheeran’s Divide (451,000).

The Roc Nation Hip Hop mogul’s LP would have entered the chart sooner, but TIDAL didn’t submit its initial numbers for the week ending July 6. Consequently, the album didn’t debut on the following week’s chart. Furthermore, because the platinum-selling 4:44 was also offered as a free download — sponsored by Sprint — the free downloads were ineligible.
Elsewhere on the chart, 21 Savage makes his grand entrance with Issa Album, DJ Khaled’s Grateful takes a 28 percent dip and, once again, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. holds down the #3 position.

JAY-Z Earns 14th #1 Album Of His Career

The numbers are finally in for JAY-Z’s 4:44 and they’re massive. With 173,728 pure album sales, 122,417,276 million streams and 262,296 equivalent album units, 4:44 has officially earned Hov his 14th #1 album. Consequently, JAY now holds the record for the solo artist with the most #1 albums in the 61-year history of the Billboard 200 chart. Every single one of his albums has also debuted at #1 since 1998’s Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life.

Issa Solid Debut

Despite mixed reviews on 21 Savage’s new project, Issa Album, the Atlanta rapper’s LP has debuted at #2 with 21,819 pure album sales, 76,561 equivalent album units and 77,042,538 streams. The project marks the 24-year-old’s official full-length debut. 2016’s Savage Mode, his joint EP with illustrious producer Metro Boomin, peaked at #23, while his collaborative track with Future, “X,” earned Savage his first platinum-selling track.

DJ Khaled Takes A Dive

Although DJ Khaled’s Grateful — executively produced by his 8-month-old son Asahd — was certified gold by the RIAA over the weekend, sales still took at 28 percent dive this week. This is the third week Khaled’s follow-up to 2016’s Major Key has been on the chart. It sold 7,856 pure albums, 50,204 equivalent album units and was streamed 49,385,943 times. Compared to Major Key, which fell to the #7 spot in its second week, Grateful was remained in the #1 spot for two consecutive weeks.

Billboard 200 Top Rap & R&B Albums For The Week Ending 7/13/2017

Note: The first number below is this week’s “total album equivalent units” count, an intersection of album sales, single sales, and streams implemented by Billboard’s new rating system. A pure album sales figure is available in bold in parenthesis and information about each album’s streaming count is available in brackets.
